The Hearst Journalism Awards Program recently announced that UTC placed 10th in the nation in its overall intercollegiate writing competition. This the first time UTC has placed in the top 10 of one of the Hearst’s overall competitions. UTC in the only university from Tennessee to place in the top 10 of one of the Hearst’s five overall competitions this year.
The award is the result of a year-long series of competitions hosted by the Hearst Journalism Awards Program. Over the course of the year, stories created by UTC students and published on Rising Rock placed in the top 20 of five 2023-2024 Hearst competitions:
- Noah Keur placed 5th in the 2023-2024 Hearst Journalism Awards for Sports for his story “From Fracture to Finish.”
- Caroline Colvin placed 7th in the 2023-2024 Hearst Journalism Awards for Feature Writing for her story “The Road to the Medal.”
- Mason Thomas Edwards placed 9th in the 2023-2024 Hearst Journalism Awards for Personality/Profile Writing for his story “Made for Loving KISS.”
- Abby White placed 15th in the 2023-2024 Hearst Journalism Awards for Photo II Picture Story/Series for her photos from the story, “Rocking the Rodeo Scene.”
- Mason Thomas Edwards placed 16th (tied) in the 2023-2024 Hearst Journalism Awards for Hearst Enterprise for his story “Made for Loving KISS.”
Winners in the overall intercollegiate writing competition include University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, first place; University of Florida, second place; Arizona State University, third place; Pennsylvania State University, fourth place; Drake University, fifth place; Indiana University, sixth place; San Francisco State University, seventh place; University of Oregon, eighth place; University of Maryland, ninth place; University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, tenth place.
A Successful Year for Rising Rock
The 10th place award is the latest in a string of awards for Rising Rock. Over the course of the last year Rising Rock has also:
- won four 2023 Excellence in Broadcasting Awards from the Tennessee Association of Broadcasters
- swept the 2023 Golden Press Card Awards
- is a finalist for three 2024 Excellence in Broadcasting Awards from the Tennessee Association of Broadcaster (awards to be announced in August 2024)
