Hearst Journalism Awards
Students involved in Rising Rock, the Department of Communication’s student publication featuring non-fiction stories about greater Chattanooga, have been gaining national recognition for their work.
Each academic year the Hearst Foundation runs a series of monthly national journalism competitions open to college students. Students from around the country enter their best work, with the top 20 in each category announced by Hearst throughout the year.
As of April 2024, stories created by UTC students and published on Rising Rock have placed in the top 20 of five 2023-2024 Hearst competitions.
Noah Keur placed 5th in the 2023-2024 Hearst Journalism Awards for Sports for his story “From Fracture to Finish.”
Caroline Colvin placed 7th in the 2023-2024 Hearst Journalism Awards for Feature Writing for her story “The Road to the Medal.”
Mason Thomas Edwards placed 9th in the 2023-2024 Hearst Journalism Awards for Personality/Profile Writing for his story “Made for Loving KISS.”
Abby White placed 15th in the 2023-2024 Hearst Journalism Awards for Photo II Picture Story/Series for her photos from the story, “Rocking the Rodeo Scene.”
Mason Thomas Edwards placed 16th (tied) in the 2023-2024 Hearst Journalism Awards for Hearst Enterprise for his story “Made for Loving KISS.”
