Lauren Bryant, 2019 recipient of the Iphigene Ochs Sulzberger Scholarship for excellent performance in American history courses, on why she chose to major in history.
I chose to major in history because history excites me. My dad introduced me to our family’s history when I was little, and my love for the subject has grown ever since. When I declared my undergraduate major as history, I instantly felt excitement and knew I had made the correct decision. The UTC History Department has only reassured me of my decision to major in history, especially as a transfer student. Most of the time, transfer students have a different experience than students who have been at a university since their freshman year. However, the UTC History Department has made me feel validated and supported and encouraged me to explore the different branches of history during and after my time at UTC. To receive the Iphigene Ochs Sulzberger Scholarship from this department not only allows me to focus less on financial issues and more on my degree, but it also shows the ample support history professors are willing to give those who truly love history. I am truly grateful for the UTC History Department and the Iphigene Ochs Sulzberger Scholarship.
