UTC’s Adolph S. Ochs Professor of Government, Department of Political Science & Public Service, Department of History, and Africana Studies Program are pleased to co-sponsor a free public lecture on Thursday, February 20th at 7:00pm in the University Center’s Signal Mountain Room.
The speaker, Dr. Timothy S. Huebner, is the Sternberg Professor of History and Associate Provost at Rhodes College in Memphis, Tennessee, and the author of three books and a dozen articles on American constitutional and judicial history, the American South, and the era of the Civil War.
The lecture is titled “Confronting the Past in Memphis: Nathan Bedford Forrest, the Antebellum Slave Trade, and the Reinvention of Civil War Memory,” and will focus on how new research into the antebellum slave trading operations of Forrest is changing how we remember the past, while also revealing how the Lost Cause long dominated public memory of the American Civil War.
