Maggie Stegall, 2020 recipient of the UTC History Department Scholarship, for excellent performance in history courses, on why she chose to major in history.
I have always had a knack for history and a love for it. It has always been a favorite subject of mine in school for as long as I can remember. Before coming to UTC I was a Foreign Language student at Chattanooga State. While my language of choice was not offered here at UTC, I could not be more grateful that I became a History major. The professors here at UTC are fantastic, and truly helpful and wonderful. I can absolutely see their passion for the subject, and it makes me feel the same. I had a fear that being a transfer student would put me at a slight disadvantage, or possibly that professors would not be as open to me. This has totally been a false and thankfully unfounded fear. So far all of my professors have been amazing and very open to me, and so many other students. This History Department truly is welcoming and it provides a great learning environment. All this goes to say that the fact that I had only spent around two semesters here and I was awarded with the UTC History Department Scholarship simply baffled me. I am so utterly grateful to the History Department for awarding me this, for not only did it help me financially, but mentally as well. All I can continue to share is my thankfulness and my own passion for history, and being given this scholarship has helped me to do so!
