Emery Benson, 2021 recipient of the History Department Scholarship for excellent performance in history courses, on why he chose to major in history.
I chose to major in history because of a lifetime of curiosity about what makes people and places act the way they do. I believe that history directly explains aspirations, tensions, and attitudes across the globe. I grew up staring at maps. I remember questioning why some states weren’t on older maps. I soon realized that history is not a static thing of the past – People, nations, and ideas continue to change the world around me. Change, good or bad, does not happen in a vacuum, and learning history shows me what generates change and affects lives daily.
Most importantly, pursuing a history degree at UTC grows my empathy for people across the globe. Though I do not always agree with actions and ideas, knowing the historic impetus behind them gives me valuable context and the opportunity to have an informed conversation. I hope, one day, that my history degree will allow me to effect positive change in the world from a place of empathy and understanding.
I am honored to receive the UTC History Department Scholarship and cannot thank my professors enough. My love for history has been encouraged in classes with wonderful discussions and professors who go above and beyond to answer questions, share resources, and foster my academic growth.
