Dr. Taylor recently spoke to the “New Books Network” podcast series about their incredible book Ordering Customs: Ethnographic Thought in Early Modern Venice.

In Ordering Customs: Ethnographic Thought in Early Modern Venice (University of Delaware Press, 2023), Dr. Kathryn Taylor analyzes how Venetians interpreted and thought about human difference during the Early Modern era. Venice was a critical site for both the increased global contact and the accelerating circulation of information that defined this period. In this podcast, Dr. Taylor talks about their work with rarely used sources including diplomatic correspondence, court records, and inventories, which ultimately shed light on what they characterize as a new form of ethnographic writing that helped define religious and cultural difference in new ways.
