Dr. A. Brooke Persons is a specialist in the archaeology of colonial contact in the Caribbean and directs UTC’s Jeffrey Brown Institute of Archaeology.
The presentation will discuss ritual and the role of personal adornment in prehistoric communities in the Greater Antilles, using recent iconographic studies to consider how items of personal adornment may be used to legitimize ritual authority in the prehistoric Caribbean. By comparing iconographic styles within one artifact class, engraved shell plaques, this analysis contributes to a broader discussion of ritual and ceremonial networks and whether such networks linked communities and political leaders throughout the prehistoric Caribbean in the centuries preceding European contact.
