Students in two UTC History courses in the Spring 2018 semester participated in study tours to regions they were examining in class and made films about their experiences engaging with history.
Students in Dr. Luke Manget’s course on Appalachian History traveled to Cades Cove, TN as part of their semester studying the extent to which perceptions of Appalachia have reflected historical realities and how the relationship between the region, the United States, and the world has changed over time. Students’ films about various aspects of Appalachian history–including the 18th-century Overmountain Men; the story of a dying coal town in Virginia; the recent dental phenomenon known as “Mountain Dew mouth”; the last Cherokee council at Red Clay; the impacts of the chestnut blight; and Gatlinburg during the Civil War–will be screened on April 30, 2018, at 1:30 PM in UTC Library room 131.
Students in Dr. John Swanson’s course on Minorities in Europe: Jews, Germans, and Roma traveled to Hungary and Slovakia as part of their semester spent learning about how Central and Eastern Europe became a series of nation-states with numerous national, ethnic, and religious minorities. Students’ films about the trip were screened on April 24, 2018.
