Summary
This research effort focuses on development and application of physics-based modeling approaches for large-eddy simulation (LES) of transitional and wall-bounded turbulent flows with massive separation. Additionally, part of the focus is on understanding fundamental aspects of such flows by means of direct numerical simulations.
Support
Currently, development and application work occurs through a collaborative research effort between FCM@UTC and CCL@GT.
Test Cases
- Taylor Green Vortex
- Transitional Boundary Layer
- Turbulent Channel
- Periodic Hill
Computational Approaches
The Two Level Simulation (TLS) model is being assessed for LES of such flows. TLS is a multi-scale approach where both large-scale and small-scales of motion are explicitly computed by employing modeling assumptions. To examine fundamental aspects of such flows direct numerical simulations will be performed. All these approaches are available within the MINCLES flow solver, thus allowing for a consistent comparison of different modeling approaches.
