Gina Gillie Trumpet and Fixed Media Consortium Project
Led by Erika L. Schafer (UTC) and
Michael Brown (UNG)

We are excited to invite trumpet players to join a consortium to commission a new work for trumpet and fixed media by composer Gina Gillie. Dr. Gillie has been an active composer for over 20 years writing primarily for brass, and her music has been performed internationally in countries including Australia, Belgium, Canada, Portugal, and the U.S. Her Mountain Ascent for trombone octet was the 2022 winner of the International Women’s Brass Conference Composition Competition, and her Song for the Lost was featured in Diversify the Stand’s Winds of Change solo collection. Dr. Gillie has been commissioned by groups such as the Interlochen Symphonic Band and the Seattle Philharmonic. Her Pale Blue Dot for horn and fixed media focuses on the view and experience of our planet from afar.
Previously Professor of Music at Pacific Lutheran University, Dr. Gillie is now composing full time and is currently traveling the world indefinitely. This new work is tentatively titled Postcards from Asia and will be a sonic reflection of the composer’s travels in Thailand, Malaysia, Taiwan, and Japan. The piece will capture Dr. Gillie’s impressions of the music, people, and environments of these four countries. The fixed media track will include soundscapes and samplings of traditional instruments from each region and incorporate traditional folksongs as well as original melodies inspired by these songs.
