Greetings, faculty!
Please see the list of announcements, funding opportunities, and resources below.
Announcements
- Congratulations to our 2023 Engineering Research Initiation cohort: Dr. Hamdy Ibrahim, Dr. Mohammad Mahtabi, and Dr. Murat Barisik. We wish you all the very best of luck!
- Beginning Monday, October 23, the biosketch and current and pending support forms must be prepared using SciENcv. The NSF fillable PDF formats will no longer be accepted. Having trouble getting set up in SciENcv? Help guides are available on ORSP’s webpage here. You can also schedule a consultation with a grant specialist here.
- Reminder – We want to hear from you! The Vice Chancellor for Research and ORSP are planning to support a site visit and networking opportunities with researchers at Oak Ridge National Laboratory and the UT – Oak Ridge Innovation Institute. We are seeking to gather information about faculty interests and preferences to help us plan for a site visit and other potential activities in 2024. Any UTC faculty member or researcher is eligible to participate. Please take a few moments to complete the brief survey here to help us schedule activities of interest to you.
- Clarification on NSF reporting deadlines: Please note that annual reports are due 90 days before the end of the budget period and final reports are due 120 days after the award end date. Your report will be flagged as OVERDUE the day after the 90- or 120-day period ends if it has not been submitted AND approved by the PO. This means that if wait until the end of the due date window to submit your report, it is highly likely that the PO will not approve it that same day and as a result, the report will be flagged as overdue. To ensure that the PO has time to review and approve your report, you are strongly encouraged to submit your report no later than 60 days prior to the end of the due date window. For additional guidance on report submission, refer to About Project Reporting and the Project Reporting FAQs on Research.gov.
Funding Opportunities
- The Teagle Foundation is accepting proposals for planning grants that build towards larger projects focused on undergraduate’s civic education. See more here. Concept papers are due December 1, 2023. Please notify ORSP by November 1 if you are interested in submitting to this program.

Sponsored Projects Policy Spotlight: Overlap on Current and Pending Support Forms
The federal templates of current and pending support forms now require PIs to describe any known or potential overlap with the proposed project for each current or pending project listed in the form. This applies at both the proposal and reporting stages. NIH has provided a handy breakdown here of the three types of overlap you should report: scientific overlap, budgetary overlap, and commitment overlap. While the discussion is focused on NIH, the guidance can be generally applied to other federal sponsors. For NSF specific guidance, see the personnel document webpage here.
Best,
