Greetings, faculty!
Please see the list of announcements, funding opportunities, and resources below.
Announcements
- NSF now requires proposals involving off-campus research to include a 2-page “Safe and Inclusive (SAI) Environments Plan”. UTC defines “off-campus research”as the collection of data, information, or samples taking place in a building or geographic area that is NOT owned by UT, any of UT’s subsidiaries, or by any named partner for a specific project. A template for the SAI Plan and a decision tool are available on ORSP’s webpage here.
Funding Opportunities
- REMINDER – The NSF CAREER program is open to Assistant Professors whose research aligns with NSF’s funding areas. The program requires a well integrated plan for research and education activities over the next five years. Prior funding does not necessarily disqualify you from applying. An eligible PI may submit only one CAREER proposal per annual competition and participate in no more than 3 competitions total. The full solicitation is available here. Templates and other resources are available on ORSP’s CAREER webpage. Proposals are due July 26, 2023. If you have not already done so, please notify ORSP by April 14 if you plan to submit a CAREER proposal this competition cycle. This is a high-volume deadline. The earlier you notify ORSP, the more support we can provide.
- NEW Limited Submission Competition – NSF is accepting a second round of applications for the Major Research Instrumentation (MRI) program. Similar to past years, UTC is limited to two (2) Track 1 proposals (for instruments costing between $100,000 and $1.4 million) and one (1) Track 2 proposal (for instruments costing $1.4 million to $4 million). Additionally this year, we can submit one (1) additional application to Track 3, for instrumentation related to the reduction of helium consumption. To be considered for the FY24 MRI selection process, you must submit an internal proposal via InfoReady Review no later than Friday, May 12, 2023 by 11:59 PM. Click here to view the internal proposal requirements and apply: https://tennessee.infoready4.com/#competitionDetail/1900320. See ORSP’s website for InfoReady Review help guides and user resources.
- The NSF Human Networks and Data Science (HNDS) programsupports research that enhances understanding of human behavior by leveraging data and network science research across a broad range of topics. HNDS has two tracks: (1) Infrastructure proposals (due Aug 3, 2023) to address the development of data resources and relevant analytic techniques that support fundamental Social, Behavioral and Economic (SBE) research. Note: An individual may be listed as a PI or co-PI on only one Infrastructure proposal per year. (2) Core research proposals (due July 13, 2023) to advance theory in a core SBE discipline by the application of data and network science methods. Please let ORSP know by April 14 if you plan to submit a proposal to either track.
- NSF and NIH have re-released A Science of Science Approach to Analyzing and Innovating the Biomedical Research Enterprise (SoS:BIO) program solicitation. The SoS:BIO program supports high-quality research to provide scientific analysis of important aspects of the biomedical research enterprise and efforts to foster a diverse, innovative, productive and efficient scientific workforce from which future scientific leaders will emerge. PO contact prior to proposal submission is strongly encouraged. The program has two upcoming deadlines: September 11, 2023 and February 9, 2024. Please let ORSP know if you are interested in submitting a proposal to this program.
- The UT Research Foundation Accelerator Fund will support new startups based on UT-generated intellectual property. Investments will range from $20,000 to $150,000. Proposals may be submitted at any time at https://utrf.tennessee.edu/utrf-accelerator-fund/ but the review of proposals will not begin until July 1, 2023. Please contact UTRF@tennessee.edu with questions.
Sponsored Projects Policy Spotlight
Sponsored Projects Policy FI0207 lays out the policies and procedures for charging salaries to sponsored projects. Curious to know under what circumstances extra service pay on a sponsored project is allowable? It’s all in this policy! Additional guidance on extra service pay is available on ORSP’s webpage.
