Project Background
The Lupton Library opened in 1974 with:
- 4,574 enrolled UTC students. Now there are 9,553 enrolled UTC students
- 1,100 patron seats in the Library at opening. Now there are only 700 seats
- 170,000 volumes moved into the library. Now there are 1.7 million items
- A renovation/expansion to the Library has been on the UTC Capital Project list since before 1990
- The current library is 116,000 gross square feet. In 2000 the Tennessee Higher Education Commission found the current library building deficient by 58,575 square feet
- Student learning styles have changed dramatically since the current library was first opened as have information research and scholarly communication practices. The design and construction of the current library does not serve students or research needs well.
