The venerable Oxford English Dictionary is the authoritative source for the history the English language. The OED provides the etymology, pronunciation, definition, and historical development for more than 500,000 words, and is one of the monumental achievements in 20th century scholarship. However, the sheer enormity of this historical dictionary (21,730 pages, to be exact!) has prohibited frequent updates: the current edition was printed in 1989!
In an effort to provide better access to the best resource on the history of the English language, Lupton Library is pleased to announce the Oxford English Dictionary Online. Listed on our Articles and Databases page, the OED Online provides all of the same, great content found in the print version, but with improved search capabilities and regular updates as the language evolves. Stop by the reference desk for more information.
