With generous support from the Tennessee Historical Records Advisory Board (THRAB) and National Historical Publications and Records Commission (NHPRC), Special Collections is offering a paid opportunity for a student enrolled at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga (UTC) during the Spring 2023 semester. The student assistant is expected to work 15 hours/week onsite in Special Collections (LIB 439) between January 9 and April 24, 2023 and must not be currently employed by UTC. The rate of pay for this position is $15/hour.
Position Description
The successful candidate will work with the Manuscripts Archivist to describe, digitize, and publish online approximately 221 photographs, as well as related booklets and correspondence totaling roughly 134 pages of material, documenting Wheland Foundry, United States Pipe and Foundry Company, and Dixie Mercerizing Company in Chattanooga, Tennessee.
Duties may include the following:
- using scanners and cameras to digitize archival materials and rare books;
- applying controlled vocabularies, including LCSH, LCNAF, AAT, and RightsStatements.org, to describe digital objects;
- and creating descriptive metadata and developing digital collections.
Required qualifications include the following:
- ability to learn about Special Collections discovery tools and resources through training and self-paced learning;
- ability to work independently and produce high quality, thorough, and accurate work;
- ability to follow detailed written instructions;
- strong organizational, analytical and problem-solving skills as well as demonstrated initiative and adaptability;
- working knowledge of office productivity suites, such as Microsoft Office and Google Drive;
- and effective written and oral communication skills.
Desired qualifications include:
- demonstrated experience working or volunteering in a library or archival repository;
- and demonstrated experience using complex data entry systems.
