The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga Library seeks a dynamic and collaborative student assistant to work in the Special Collections unit to help arrange and describe holdings in the Tommie F. Brown papers. The Student Assistant position is generously funded by the National Historical Publications & Records Commission (NHPRC) to complete “One of the Black Legislators”: Providing Access to the Tommie F. Brown Papers (RH-103542-23). The project supports processing and description of 125 linear feet of archival material amassed by Tommie F. Brown (1934- ), an accomplished civic leader, educator, researcher, and state legislator whose career is defined by historic firsts, including serving as the first Black woman to represent the 28th District in the Tennessee House of Representatives from 1992 to 2012.
Position Summary
Reporting to the Project Archivist and Director of Special Collections, the Student Assistant arranges and describes the archival materials for the National History Publications and Records Commission (NHPRC) grant funded project, “One of the Black Legislators”: Providing Access to the Tommie F. Brown Papers. The Project Assistant must be able to work 15 hours/week during the following semesters:
- Fall 2024, August 19 to December 10
- Spring 2025, January 6 to April 29
- Summer 2025, May 14 to August 5
- Fall 2025, dates to be determined
The Student Assistant will be paid a rate of $15/hour. Specific duties include:
- Works collaboratively with the Project Archivist and the Director of Special Collections to describe the Tommie F. Brown papers in accordance with Describing Archives: A Content Standard (DACS) and local best practices.
- Contributes to outreach and programming related to the Tommie F. Brown papers, including identifying materials to feature in social media outreach efforts.
- Assists with written reports on the progress of the project as needed.
