The Special Collections has received an exciting and unexpected new acquisition from a cousin of the late Elvis Presley. The cousin, Wesley Presley, an alum of the University of Chattanooga, wished to donate an item of Elvis memorabilia to add to our collection (which previously contained no Elvis items) in honor of his cousin. The item donated is Elvis’ last fried peanut butter & banana sandwich- in fan circles, known as the “sandwich that was never eaten”. While perhaps an unusual donation, the item holds great importance and is most certainly the only one of its kind left today.
A Bit of Background:
A detective at the scene of the late legend’s death discovered the sandwich & held it over for evidence in the precinct’s cold storage evidence room. Determined to have no involvement in Elvis’ passing, the sandwich was released to relatives who requested that it remain in the cold storage unit until they could find a proper holding place for it- where it has remained ever since.
Acquisition Details:
The Special Collections department will be getting a cold storage room in the new library & will be equipped to properly care for the sandwich. It will remain at its current location until then. Once the sandwich arrives in the Special Collections it will be available for viewing by appointment only. Once logistics are determined it will also be the focal point of a themed exhibit that will be nationally publicized.
