The Rules for Discussion of Racial Discrimination in Public Schools were created in 1955 by two members of the Chattanooga Board of Education shortly after the landmark United States Supreme Court Brown v. Board of Education decision that declared public school segregation unconstitutional. The rules were used by members of the school board to maintain order in often contentious public hearings and open meetings of the board’s Inter-racial Advisory Committee that was created to discuss public school integration in Chattanooga, Tennessee.
This document is part of the Raymond B. Witt Chattanooga Public Schools Desegregation Records, which contains more than 100 legal documents and school board records relating to public school desegregation and the 1960 Mapp v. Board of Education court case that forced Chattanooga to create and implement a plan for integration.
