The following UTC Faculty and Staff have attracted $1,399,723 in external grant and contract awards:
Drs. Michael Danquah (Chemical Engineering), Dalei Wu (Computer Science), Henry Spratt (Biology, Geology, and Environmental Science), and Khalid Tantawi (Engineering Management and Technology) have received $450,000 from the National Science Foundation for the project entitled, “High-precision monitoring of foodborne pathogens in food manufacturing facilities.”
Dr. Dawn Ford (Health & Human Performance) has received $3,000 from the American College Health Association for the project entitled, “UTC COVID-19 Vaccine Confidence Peer Ambassador Program.”
Bryan Lane (WUTC) has received $108,415 from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting for the project entitled, “2021-23 Radio Community Service Grant for WUTC.”
Drs. Jennifer Lynberg and Kim Wingate (School of Education) have received $60,571 from the Tennessee Department of Education for the project entitled, “Tennessee Governors School Teacher Prep.”
Dr. Abdul Ofoli (Electrical Engineering) has requested and received $5,000 from the Electric Power Research Institute for the project entitled, “Machine Vision Application for Damaged Solar Panels Detection.”
Dr. Priscilla Simms-Roberson (School of Nursing) has received $2,000 from the CVS Health Foundation for the project entitled, “2021 CVS Health Foundation Advance Practice Nurse and Physician Assistant Scholarship Program.”
Dr. Tony Skjellum (SIMCenter) has received $30,000 from the National Nuclear Security Administration – Sandia National Lab for the project entitled, “ATSE Spack 2020-2021.”
Drs. Kristina Wick (School of Nursing) and Jessica Freeman (Communication) in collaboration with the Tennessee Department of Health have received $745,737 from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for the project entitled, “National Initiative to Address COVID-19 Health Disparities Among Populations at High-Risk and Underserved, Including Racial and Ethnic Minority Populations and Rural Communities.”

Dr. Olumide Ayodele (Chemical Engineering) has requested $208,176 from the Tennessee Valley Authority for the project entitled, “Synthesis of zeolite-graphene nanocomposite for continuous CO2 capture and chemical synthesis.”
Dr. Meredith Barbee (Chemistry and Physics) has requested $5,000 from the Oak Ridge Associated Universities for the project entitled, “Tracking single-chain polymer folding processes through colorimetric host-guest interactions.”
Dr. Dawn Ford (Health & Human Performance) in collaboration with the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation have requested $11,731 from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for the project entitled, “Lead Testing of Drinking Water in Hamilton County Child Care Facilities.”
Dr. Yingfeng Wang (Engineering and Computer Science) has requested $305,000 from the National Science Foundation for the project entitled, “A Comprehensive Computational Platform for Peptide and Protein Identification – COOLAPI.”
Dr. Jin Wang (Mathematics) has requested $805,174 from the ––National Science Foundation for the project entitled, “Fluid Dynamics in Plant Cell Growth: Experimentation, Modeling, and Simulation.”
Dr. Mengjun Xie (National Center of Academic Excellence in Cyber Defense), Chang Phuong, and David Schwab (Engineering and Computer Science) have requested $149,972 from the National Security Agency Central Security Service for the project entitled, “UTC GenCyber Student Program.”
Dr. Sungwoo Yang (Chemical Engineering) has requested $4,950 from the Branch Technology for the project entitled, “Synthesis of Sustainable Rigid Polyurethane Foam via Glycolysis using Polyurethane Scrubs from Construction Insulators.”
