CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – UTC/The Loop – Some UTC students seem too lazy to enjoy the lazy river at the campus’ new Aquatic Center, along with everything else that it offers.
UTC’s Aquatic Center opened at the beginning of the fall 2011 semester. The center has a 30-person hot tub, a two-story water slide, a lap pool, lazy river, and water basketball and volleyball courts all in one facility. Also, the aquatic center offers kayak lessons, lifeguarding lessons, SCUBA diving lessons, swim lessons and water aerobics. All are free for UTC students.
The hours of the center vary throughout the week. The earliest it opens is 11 a.m. and closes at 9 p.m. most days of the week. However, some students like UTC junior Chris Sinsheimer, feel that the hours do not work with their busy schedules. “I am a full-time student and a full-time trying to balance other activities on the side. But unfortunately, the hours of the center is hard to match with all that’s going on with my life.” Sinsheimer said.
On the other hand, Aquatic Center lifeguard, Katie Rogers is confused as to why students do not take advantage of the center as it was intended for. “A majority of the students using the center are using the lap pool which was already provided at the MacClellan gym.” Rogers said. With all of the other additions to the center, Rogers doesn’t believe students get their money’s worth when it’s not being used.
Rogers mentioned that there will be “Dive In” movie nights as well as inner tube derby racing this semester to get more students to use the facility and have a good time. It seems to be just a matter of going for some UTC students.
