Complete the Beyond the Classroom Challenge
The Beyond the Classroom Challenge is a great way for students to jump into a broad variety of FREE campus and community events, learning more about UTC, Chattanooga, and themselves—all based on their own schedules and interests.  Each week, this newsletter will identify events that count towards the challenge.  You can also view more events HERE.  Students participating in the challenge must participate and reflect on 10 events before Reading Day (December 3), along with the additional requirements for the program.  To learn more, click HERE or contact Bengt Carlson, Coordinator for Experiential Learning, at Bengt-Carlson@utc.edu.

Part-Time On & Off Campus Job Fair – Tuesday, August 27
The Center for Career and Leadership Development is hosting two sessions of the Part-Time On & Off Campus Job Fair this Tuesday (10:00 am – Noon & 1:00 pm – 3:00 pm) in the UC Tennessee Room. Come prepared to speak with local employers about part-time job opportunities both on and off campus. Some employers will participate in both sessions, and some will participate in only one session.  Some employers will have applications for you to fill out, and some may direct you to their website to fill out online applications.  Bring copies of your resume, and dress as if you were applying for a job anywhere.

2019 Summer Undergraduate Research Symposium – Wednesday, August 28
Are you interested in learning more about undergraduate research at UTC? Would you like to participate in an undergraduate research project? Attend the UR Symposium on Wednesday, August 28 from 4-6pm in the UC Chattanooga Rooms to network with 2019 scholars, and learn about all of the exciting UR research projects on campus, and discover how you can get involved.  The student poster presentation session will run from 4:00pm-5:30pm followed by a mix and mingle from 5:30pm-6pm, which will feature the UTC Clarinet Quartet.

GEAR UP Jobs Available – Fall 2019 Semester
The GEAR UP program, which helps 7th & 8th graders at four inner-city schools get on track for college, is hiring tutors.  If you are interested in helping a group of students who have faced some serious challenges succeed in middle school, move toward high school graduation, and realize their college ambitions, please consider becoming part of the GEAR UP effort.

Successful applicants will:

  • Have completed a minimum of 45 undergraduate credit hours before the fall 2019 semester
  • Have at least a 2.5 G.P.A.
  • Be enrolled in a university program or have already graduated from one
  • Be able to arrange transportation to the Chattanooga Girls Leadership Academy, Dalewood Middle, East Lake Academy or Orchard Knob Middle

Pay for after-school staff is $9.50 an hour and $11 an hour for graduate students.  In-school teaching assistants make $9 an hour and $10.50 for graduate students. Schedules are based on our schools’ needs and staff availability, and most staff members will work about 15 hours each week.  If you meet the above qualifications and you’re interested in lining up with Team GEAR UP, please download our application packet HERE. Return your application or direct your questions to hunter-huckabay@utc.edu.  Applications will be accepted until all positions are filled, and graduate students are eligible for these positions and are urged to apply.
