UTC Construction Competition Team consisting of one team in the Commercial Building category and one team in the Shadow Team category, totaling 9 students, traveled to Peachtree City, GA November 14, 2022 to complete the ASC Region 2 Construction Competition. ASC in a national organization of Associated Schools of Construction (ASC). 8 of the students are Construction Management Majors and 1 Civil Major minoring in Construction Management. made up the UTC Construction Competition.
The UTC Construction Competition Team finished fractions of points behind Auburn and winning over Clemson and Florida Gulf Coast by coming in 5th Place over all in the Commercial Building category. The top five ASC Region 2 rankings were, 1st Place went to Kennesaw State, 2nd North Carolina-Charlotte, 3rd Florida, 4th Auburn, 5th UTC.. The UTC Commercial Building Team had the best safety program and the best plan for hurricane preparedness to protect the project from wind and rain which included a preparation plan and a response to damage control plan according to the judges of that category.. The project consisted of at 38,0000 square feet pre-engineered metal building (PEMB) that was in a high security location for use of temporary offices located in a remote location in Georgia. There were approximately 175 students from approximately 13 universities including Auburn, Clemson, Florida, University of Puerto Rico, Mississippi State, North Carolina State, Appalachian State, Kennesaw State, Western North Carolina, Georgia Tech, and others.
The UTC Shadow Team worked on a rocket manufacturing facility with challenges of both building design and site work design. The UTC Shadow Team finished 5th place overall according to the judges.
The first workday of the competition was from 7:00 A.M. to 7:00 P.M. receiving plans and specifications virtually. The Commercial Building team had to put together an estimate, project schedule, safety plan, logistics plan without any outside help. The UTC Construction Competition Team traveled to Peachtree City, GA to attend a Career Fir at the conference center. Each student submitted their resumes to construction company representing 10 major construction companies in the southeast region. Three of the major construction companies said they always look for the ” Mocs Power C” on their team shirts because they always interview well and have great resumes.
The Commercial Team presented their PowerPoint Team presentations in front of the judges early the following morning. The presentation consisted of their project team organization requirements, discussed what project problems they found and how they proposed to resolve the multiple project issues and situations. The project was an actual project that is currently on going.
The next morning after the Career Fair, Shadow Team started at 7:00 A.M. developing solutions to problems to an acutal the rocket plant currently being constructed. The solutions including a project estimate, project schedule, safety plan, logistics plan, and multiple issues to overcome. The presentations were given in front of the judges in the late afternoon.
