In recent weeks several CECS students were selected for academic scholarships of regional and national note. Electrical Engineering majors Alexander Lee, David Pitts, and Sarah Roberts were selected by the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE) as Power and Energy Scholars for 2016. Chosen from over 500 applicants, the three students were recognized for both their academic ability, extracurricular activities, and commitment to advancing the power and energy field. IEEE is the largest technical professional organization dedicated to the advancement of technology for the benefit of humanity.
Civil Engineering Senior Keith Schaal is one of University’s 2016-17 Mario and Grace Charles Foundation Scholars. Following an extensive application and interview process, Keith was chosen on the basis of his academic record, involvement in community service initiatives, and work experience. The Charles Foundation is a regional philanthropic organization established by Mr. and Mrs. Mario Charles to support undergraduate students in the fields of elementary education and engineering. Keith serves as current president of Tau Beta Pi Honor Society and plans to pursue graduate study following his graduation this spring.
CECS Sophomore Mechanical Engineering major Jason Mtsimbe was selected by the East Tennessee Chapter of the American Association of Blacks in Energy (AABE) as one of four 2016-17 recipients of $1500 scholarships. Joining Jason and Dean Daniel Pack for the scholarship presentation is Mr. Jacques Irvin, official with the Electric Power Board of Chattanooga and Chair of the AABE Chapter’s Scholarship and Fundraising Committee. The East Tennessee AABE Chapter, with the support of TVA and EPB, sponsors the annual awards presented to high-achieving students majoring in engineering or physics. In addition to his academic pursuits, Jason is a musician. This fall he will release an album entitled, Color & Gold. Jason is the son of CECS Associate Professor of Civil Engineering Dr. Mbaki Onyango.
