Dr. Erin Melhorn (Occupational Therapy), Dr. Stephanie Eton, Dr. Jessica Hackathorne, and Dr. Carolyn Padalino (Physical Therapy) have received $11,767 from the Alliance of Women Philanthropists for the project entitled, “Empowering Independence: Establishing an Innovative Aging in Place Lab for the Occupational and Physical Therapy programs at UTC.”
Dr. Serkan Varol (Engineering Management and Technology) has received $10,962 from Volkswagen Group of America for the project entitled, “Engineering & Planning Center at VW- Engineering Management and Technology at UTC.”
Dr. Murat Barisik (Mechanical Engineering) has received $199,997 from the National Science Foundation for the project entitled, “Molecular-level Characterization of Water-in-Salt Electric Double-Layer Capacitors: Nanoscale Thermal Effects on Differential Capacitance.”
Dr. Khalid Tantawi (Engineering Management and Technology) has received $5,906 from the REpowering Schools for the project entitled, “Integrating Wind Energy in the Mechatronics Education.”
Dr. Azad Hossain (Biology, Geology and Environmental Science) and Dr. Hong Qin (Computer Science and Engineering) have received $152,609 from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration for the project entitled, “Remote Sensing of Water Quality in the Tennessee River.”
Dr. Jill Shelton (Psychology) in collaboration with Florida International University has received $22,054 from the Mental Research Institute for the project entitled, “The Role of Self & Others in the Internalization of Disability Identity.”
Dr. Deborah McAllister, Dr. Jason Gordon, Dr. Jennifer Lynberg (School of Education), and Dr. Aniekan Ebiefung (Mathematics) have received $1,691,885 from the National Science Foundation for the project entitled, “Graduate Yearlong Experience and Residency for Acquiring STEM Teaching Competencies.” Nora Ketron and Katie Gohn (Library) have received $4,687 from the Alliance of Women Philanthropists for the project entitled, “UTC Library Whole Student Wellness Collection.”

Dr. Sherah Basham (Social, Cultural & Justice Studies) has requested $99,830 from Arnold Ventures for the project entitled, “A multi-site planning of a rapid video response model: Phase I – randomized control trial planning and piloting.”
Charles Mix (IGTLab) has requested $44,028 from the Southeast Aquatic Resources Partnership for the project entitled, “Aquatic Connectivity Barrier Geospatial Data Validation, Phase II.”
Dr. Jejal Reddy Bathi (Civil and Chemical Engineering) and Dr. Kidambi Sreenivas (Mechanical Engineering) have requested $298,204 from the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation for the project entitled, “Assessing Microplastic Pollution Sources and Treatment Effectiveness in Urban Watersheds: A Comprehensive Study.”
Austin Harris (CUIP), Dr. Dalei Wu and Dr. Yukun Yuan (Computer Science and Engineering) have requested $149,764 from the State of Tennessee Appropriations for the project entitled, “COAST RV Android Application Development.”
Dr. Yukun Yuan (Computer science and Engineering), in collaboration with Central State University and Florida State University, has requested $199,806 from the National Science Foundation for the project entitled, “Enhancing Efficiency and Sustainability in Electric Transportation and Power Systems through Interaction-aware Management.”
Dr. Yingfeng Wang (Computer science and Engineering), Dr. Feng Guo (Psychology), Dr. Yu Liang, Dr. Dalei Wu (Computer Science and Engineering), and Dr. Abdelrahman Mohammed (Electrical Engineering) in collaboration with Kean University have requested $195,000 from the National Science Foundation for the project entitled, “Advancing Breast Cancer Detection in Ultrasound Imaging through Active and Weakly Supervised Learning Techniques.”
Dr. Mohammad Mahtabi (Mechanical Engineering), in collaboration with Purdue University, has requested $193,944 from the National Science Foundation for the project entitled, “Multi-Site Fatigue Damage Assessment of Additively Manufactured Components using Seeded Defects.”
Dr. Hong Qin (Computer science and Engineering), in collaboration with the University of Arizona, has requested $269,551 from the National Science Foundation for the project entitled, “Design of novel enzyme scaffolds with a tunable substrate binding pocket for fatty acid biosynthesis using deep learning and optimization.”
Dr. Ignatius Fomunung (Civil and Chemical Engineering), Dr. Seong Dae Kim (Engineering Management and Technology), Dr. Gary McDonald Mechanical Engineering), Dr. Chang Phuong (Computer Science and Engineering), Dr. Jessica Taylor (Learning and Leadership), Dr. Bradley Harris, Dr. Mbakisya Onyango, Dr. Joseph Owino (Civil and Chemical Engineering, in collaboration with Chattanooga State Community College and Dalton State College Foundation, have requested $3,613,498 from the National Science Foundation for the project entitled, “Engineering Effective Pathways to STEM Careers.”
Dr. Tian Li (Chemistry and Physics) has requested $792,705 from the National Science Foundation for the project entitled, “Demonstration of distributed quantum sensing with Heisenberg scaling by creating multipartite entanglement on a metropolitan scale quantum network.”
Dr. Mina Sartipi (CUIP / UTC Research Institute), Austin Harris, and Patrick Bigelow (CUIP), have requested $1,397,718 from the City of Chattanooga for the project entitled, “FY22 DOT Earmarks – Smart City Testbed Expansion.”
Dr. Luis Sanchez Diaz (Chemistry and Physics) has requested $874,232 from the Department of Energy for the project entitled, “Modeling anisotropic structure of colloidal systems under flow using computer simulations and Rheo-SANS.”
Charles Mix and Nyssa Hunt (IGTLab) have requested $2,806 from the Sudbury Valley Trustees for the project entitled, “Sudbury Valley Trustees Web Map and Applications Enhancements.”
Dr. Donald Reising (Electrical Engineering) in collaboration with the Tennessee Technological University, has requested $19,999 from the National Science Foundation for the project entitled, “TREN: Building Tennessee Research and Education Network.”
Dr. James Tanner (Communications) has requested $7,500 from the Solutions Journalism Network for the project entitled, “University of Tennessee at Chattanooga Media Project.”
Dr. Mengjun Xie (National Center of Academic Excellence Cyber Defense) and Dr. Hong Qin (Computer Science and Engineering) have requested $231,473 from the National Security Agency Central Security Service for the project entitled, “UTC AY24-25 DoD Cyber Scholarship Recruitment and Capacity Building.”
