Finance students from the Gary W. Rollins College of Business at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga recently had the opportunity to attend the 2025 Student Managed Investment Fund Consortium (SMIFC) Conference in Chicago. The conference brought together students, educators and industry professionals from across the country to discuss best practices and emerging trends in investment management.
Representing the Rollins College of Business were Rilee Ervin, Bana Sulieman, Shaun Williams, Daniel Goodman, Brannon Smith, and Ethan Tidwell, all active members of the SMILE Fund (Student Managed Investment Learning Experience Fund). Robert L. Maclellan & UC Foundation Associate Professor of Finance Hunter Holzhauer and SMILE Fund Program Manager Hunter Carroll joined the group as advisors for the trip. They spent several days engaging with finance professionals, exploring new ideas in investment strategy and networking with peers from other universities.
A highlight of the trip was meeting a SMILE Fund alumnus, Ben Cheatham, who now works at J.P. Morgan in the Windy City. Ben offered valuable insight into how their classroom and fund management experiences can translate into successful finance careers.
“Dinner with Ben was a a great experience for the students,” said Dr. Holzhauer. “He helped the them picture what life after graduation could look like when you apply yourself and build your network.”
Beyond the conference sessions, the students also took time to experience the city of Chicago. One memorable moment was a sunset architecture boat tour, which provided a unique view of the city’s skyline and its world-renowned architectural history.
The Gary W. Rollins College of Business continues to emphasize experiential learning opportunities that prepare students for leadership in business and finance. Participation in national events like SMIFC reinforces UTC’s commitment to hands-on education and professional development.
