Let’s play a speed round of myth busters. Spot the myth.
- Minecraft and Maslow could never coexist.
- You can’t teach motivation through an AI voiceover for a dog.
- TikTok doesn’t belong in a classroom.
Consider all these myths busted, thanks to students in the Management 3300 course at the Gary W. Rollins College of Business at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga.
Students in Professor John McKinney’s Organizational Behavior management class made management concepts relevant when they created TikTok videos to explain what they learned throughout the semester.
“Learning needs to be fun,” said Professor McKinney. “This assignment gave the students an opportunity to connect the classroom to something they enjoy.”
Senior Management student Kelsey Vandenbossche took it to the next level when she used her dog, Romeo, to explain motivation in the workplace. She explained how rewards and recognition increase morale and, therefore, motivation.
“The assignment really made me stop and think back on everything we learned this semester,” she said. “It was a great review of the different management concepts and seeing Romeo beside me while I was brainstorming inspired me to use him as a real-life example of motivation in a fun and relatable way.”
Another student used references from “The Office” to show how important communication is in the workplace. From encoding to decoding, he explained that expectations can get lost in translation if not explicitly communicated.
Shout-out to professors who make learning fun and students who find creative ways to make concepts click.
