“Being immersed in data analytics is really cool because it just makes you believe that you are a data analyst,” Lutz said.

Lutz said his graduate assistantship has allowed him to work with multiple faculty members on research projects using real-world data.

“I’m working at the university for a few different professors, and I’m getting to do some research with them and really work with real-world data on real-world problems,” he said. “That’s been kind of a dream come true.”

“One of the most impactful parts is being connected with professors who work full-time in the industry, who are giving real-world advice and teaching the programs and applications that data analysts use,” she said.

Faculty support and applied coursework help students build confidence in technical tools throughout the program. Gavin Thompson is a current MSDA student in the program, who encourages incoming students to gain basic familiarity with analytics tools before starting the program.

“The best piece of advice coming into the program is to take a look at some of the programs you see online, such as SQL and Python,” Thompson said. “They teach everything from the basics, but if you already know a little before coming in, you’re in a great position to succeed.”

Graduates of the MSDA program are prepared for roles such as data analyst, business intelligence analyst, data scientist and analytics consultant. The program’s flexible delivery options also make it accessible to both full-time students and working professionals.

4. Applied experience beyond the classroom
