The Go Global community has been busy in the past month since the commencing of classes. When the semester begins, many events are available for students to attend as part of Welcoming Week and these events were a great introduction to campus life for the international students. UTC Go Global is an LLC (Living Learning Community) and acts as a community in campus housing to group international students with American students. These students live side-by-side and experience cultural diversity and exchange. During the first week, Go Global participated in the LLC Kick-off event on Chamberlain Field which brought together all LLC’s across campus to meet and play various field games. ESL students (Emishi Tokura, Aya Wada, Himeko Takenaka, Juria Niwa, Karin Tsukada, Nami Isomura, and Sana Nishio) all attended to participate in the activities.
Another welcoming week activity is the Oak Street Roast. Go Global came to represent and enjoy the free food and snag a pair of eclipse glasses for the upcoming solar eclipse. Nami Isomura, Juria Niwa, Sana Nishio, Aya Wada, and Emishi Tokura attended and experienced the fervent school spirit of UTC. Following the roast, UTC was lucky enough to have the first day of classes off to view the solar eclipse. On Monday August 21, members of the Go Global community viewed the solar eclipse outside Stophel complex to experience a unique astronomical day.
After the first week of school, Go Global decided to have a fun bowling/game night at Spare Time Chattanooga. Spare Time is an entertainment facility with bowling, laser tag, arcade games, and good food. In the past, Spare Time has enjoyed hosting events for international students and offers special discounts for the group. This close relationship between the staff has lasted and Go Global is in the best position to make use of their facility. Many of the Go Global students both international and American came to bowl and get to know more members of their community. After 11pm at Spare Time, the lights go out to give way to disco lights and large screens with music videos. The atmosphere was care-free and all the students had a great time. Go Global has more events in the works and hopes to continue connecting international students with the UTC community.
