When I applied for this trip, I wasn’t sure if I would actually get to go. Then a few weeks went by, and things started to get real, and I was actually going to be leaving the country for the first time. My little support system was pushing me to go, so I thought why not. It was a once in a lifetime experience. I was anxious because I did not know anyone on the trip and had to travel overseas. Luckily, the professors that would be leading us, had some get togethers for the group so we could all get acquainted before the trip. I realized I was going to be with a fun bunch. If you are worried about traveling solo, don’t be, it was my first time and it was a lot of fun to navigate and figure out things for myself. It will also make you more comfortable with traveling to different airports!
World Strides did an excellent job with creating the itinerary, and the tour guides we had made it even better. They gave us a lot of free time to explore, and recommendations for food and attractions. One thing I recommend is getting lost! It makes the experience so much more fun, especially with a group. You get to see things you would not have gone out of your way to see! I was able to really learn about the culture of Spain and Portugal. Walking the streets with locals, trying new transportation systems, and immersing myself in the culture made me want to never leave. The culture in Europe was dramatically different than here in the US, and it made me pay even closer attention to my surroundings. I wanted to try and blend in with the locals and not give off the “ugly American,” stereotype. There is such a rich history in the countries I visited! Seeing buildings that were built over five-hundred years ago made me slightly emotional, and in a state of disbelief. Toledo and Sintra were my favorite destinations. The architecture and overall atmosphere was different from the more touristy locations we went to. The food was so good in both countries, I tried so many things I never had before. Unique flavors are used, everything is worth trying at least once!
I could not have asked for a better group. We all became really close on the trip and were basically attached by the hip. If anyone is looking into going abroad, it’s worth it for sure. If I had not gone on this trip, I am not sure if I would have ever left the US. If money is an issue, there is money out there! Apply for scholarships and more, I am sure there is something out here for you. These experiences are once in a lifetime, and you gain some friends on the way. So, I say get out there and start looking for programs, I promise it is something everyone should do at least once in their life.
Jovita Roby (BS Marketing) spent 2 weeks in December, 2023 studying abroad in Spain and Portugal with the Rollins College of Business (faculty led). Jovina had the following to say about studying abroad, “Let the world be your own classroom, learn, breathe and get uncomfortable and experience what you never have before!”
