Studying abroad in Barcelona during Fall 2025 was one of the most meaningful and life-changing experiences I have ever had. When I first chose the WorldStrides (previously ISA) program and decided on Barcelona, I was excited about traveling and experiencing a new culture, but I did not realize how much I would grow as a person. Looking back, I can confidently say that studying abroad helped shape my confidence, independence, and perspective on the world in ways I will carry with me for the rest of my life.
Barcelona was the perfect place to call home for a semester. The city was full of energy, history, and creativity. From walking through the Gothic Quarter to relaxing near the beach, every part of the city felt unique. I was especially inspired by the architecture, particularly Gaudí’s buildings, which made the city feel artistic and alive. Barcelona also offered an incredible balance between fast-paced city life and peaceful moments by the sea, which made it easy to feel both excited and grounded at the same time.

The WorldStrides program played a huge role in making my experience successful. I chose WorldStrides because of its strong support system and commitment to helping students adjust to life abroad. From the beginning, the staff made me feel comfortable and encouraged me to explore beyond my comfort zone. WorldStrides gave me the freedom to create my own experience while still providing guidance and resources whenever I needed them. This balance helped me grow more independent while still feeling supported.
The most meaningful part of my study abroad experience was the friendships I made. Being in a new country brought people together in a special way. We shared new experiences, challenges, and unforgettable memories. Whether we were exploring the city, traveling on weekends, or simply spending time together, those moments created deep connections. These friendships taught me the importance of being open to others, embracing differences, and appreciating the value of human connection. I met people from different backgrounds who helped broaden my understanding of the world and reminded me how powerful shared experiences can be.

Traveling on weekends was another highlight of my semester. Some of my favorite trips were to Copenhagen, Budapest, and Paris. Copenhagen stood out for its clean design, calm atmosphere, and sense of balance. Budapest amazed me with its beautiful architecture and rich history, especially along the Danube River. Paris felt magical, from seeing the Eiffel Tower to exploring small cafés and museums. Each city showed me a different side of Europe and helped me appreciate how diverse cultures can be, even within the same continent.
Beyond the friendships and travel, the biggest change happened within myself. Studying abroad taught me how to be comfortable with uncertainty. I learned how to navigate unfamiliar places, adapt to new situations, and trust myself more. I became more confident in my decisions and more open to new experiences. I learned that growth often comes from stepping into situations that feel uncomfortable at first. Living in another country showed me that I am capable of more than I ever realized.
Barcelona gave me more than memories,it gave me perspective. It taught me to appreciate different cultures, value meaningful connections, and approach life with curiosity instead of fear. I returned home with a stronger sense of independence, a deeper appreciation for diversity, and a clearer understanding of who I am.
For future study abroad students, I would say this: go into the experience with an open heart and an open mind. Take chances, meet new people, and allow yourself to grow. Studying abroad is not just about the places you visit, but about the person you become along the way. Barcelona will always hold a special place in my heart because it helped me discover a stronger, more confident version of myself.
Savannah Arthur (BS Nursing) spent the Fall 2025 semester studying abroad in Barcelona, Spain with WorldStrides. Savannah had the following to say about studying abroad, “Studying abroad taught me that growth happens when you step into the unknown. Barcelona gave me friendships, confidence, and memories that changed how I see myself and the world. If you are thinking about studying abroad, take the leap, you will come back as a stronger version of yourself.”
