Before signing up for the study abroad experience and the course, I was very apprehensive about taking the leap of faith and going to another country. However, two of my very best friends decided to apply to the trip/ class, so I knew it was meant to be. Since I knew people going on the trip, I was less apprehensive about being so far away for two weeks. Fast forward four months and we are boarding the plane to leave for Rome, Italy. I was most excited to see the Colosseum and the Trevi Fountain before leaving. However, when we arrived, I could not stop craving the Italian desserts everywhere. I was immersed in the most local Italian cuisine a person could find, because we were in the home country of so many iconic dishes and desserts.
While traveling for the ten days about Rome, we went to about thirty different places. My top three places included the Villa Borghese Museum, the Colosseum, and the Sistine Chapel. The Villa Borghese Museum housed world famous art works from artist like Michelangelo, Raphael, and Gian Lorenzo Bernini. The city of Rome obtained this museum from the Borghese family in 1903, and the city opened it up to the public in 1903. The Colosseum was very exciting to be at because it was built hundreds of years ago. What I like most about it was that I was able to stand on some of the original marble still there. Also, I really enjoyed seeing the Sistine Chapel where Michelangelo spent a tireless number of hours working on the artwork.
I cannot spend enough hours in the day appreciating my time in Rome. I loved every second there. Since traveling, it has sparked my interest in traveling other places, and I cannot wait to travel to new and exciting places, like Rome, Italy.
Savannah Hodge is majoring in Exercise Science. She spent Spring Break 2019 in Rome, Italy as part of a faculty-led trip for her Classics 1200 course. Savannah had the following to say about her time abroad, “By studying abroad, I was given a trip of a life time. I will never forget being able to see the Colosseum in Rome lit up green for St. Patrick’s Day. If you are interested in pursuing any kind of study abroad, I definitely say that you should take that chance! You get to experience new food and culture like never before.”
