UTC kicked off the 2018 Spring semester and first day of orientation by welcoming over 30 new students from 16 different countries to our campus with a breakfast hosted by the Center for Global Education. After enjoying some hot coffee and tea to prepare for a frigid morning, the ESL students split from the graduate and undergraduate students to complete their registration. During their orientation, the new students were able to get helpful information about immigration, campus services, and life in the US. One of the most exciting portions of the orientation for the students was the visit to the Mocs Card Center to get their student IDs; making them official UTC Mocs!
With registration out of the way, the real orientation could now begin. Freshmen Orientation and New International Student Orientation share many similarities. Both orientations aim to familiarize new college students to our campus by bringing in guest speakers from different campus departments, touring all throughout the various campus facilities, and playing fun “Ice-breaker” games to get students socializing. However, International students have the added task of following the extremely important Immigration Information Session. This session explains the details behind the various documents and deadlines required to remain an eligible international student.
Since Day 1 of orientation was reserved for business, Day 2 was for fun. After touring the UTC Library and the ARC, it was time for our new students to see what the city had to offer. The Chattanooga Hop Trolley Tour took students to all of the Scenic City hotspots, such as the Chattanooga Choo Choo, Coolidge Park, and the Bluff View Art District. After two informative days, our new international students are now ready to begin an incredible semester here at UTC!
