Every year, to celebrate diversity and cultural exchange, the Center for Global Education curates the “What Diversity Means to Me” Wall. This is an important part of UTC’s annual International Education Week activities. This year, we’ve decided to display the Diversity Wall in an online format.
To curate this year’s “wall,” we asked the UTC community to answer to the question, “What does diversity mean to you?” Below, you will find their responses.
Out of obligation to individual privacy, the Center for Global Education has opted to omit the participants’ names. If you would like to have your name listed with your submission, please email amy-devan@utc.edu.

To me, diversity means to celebrate and uplift those of underrepresented backgrounds. Across the world, there are people from all paths of life and it is important to commit to being a lifelong learner. There is so much to learn from each other and our cultures. To celebrate diversity is priceless.

Diversity is embracing different cultures and accepting the humanity on top of every race or color.

Diversity means there are many walks of life, and they are all different. We may cross paths with each other, and hope that our differences bring us closer together.

To me it means to have a variety of races, genders, and sexual orientations. All of them come together in support.

For me, diversity is the inclusive act of representing all types of people. People who feel different should not find shame in who they are. How unique they are is a form of representing people who relate to them. Ethnicity, nationality, spoken language, ability/disability, and even simple interests and hobbies are some basic characteristics that are judged by society. I find that diversity in basic everyday events is overly applauded when it should truly be a given. Showing the type of people that live in our society is more important than just accomplishing a milestone. Diversity is not just a practice in advertising the way the world is. Diversity defines this world.

Diversity means that there is a fuller picture of God’s creativity, shown through different races, personalities, beliefs, and passions.

For me, diversity is the intersection of multiple identities, ideas, and thoughts, both within a person and in a community. Celebrating diversity includes not only tolerating differing perspectives, but valuing them as a way to grow.

To me, diversity means representation of other cultures, ethnicities, and lifestyles in popular media and in my community.

Accepting that other people are different than us and not only being okay with it, but embracing it. Wanting or being willing to learn about others’ way of life!

Diversity means getting better ideas because not everyone thinks the same way.

Diversity to me is an opportunity to celebrate and embrace the variety and creativity in the world around us. Life, people, culture, thoughts, values, and beliefs.

Diversity is not merely the acceptance and appreciation of difference, but it is an acknowledgment that everyone walks through this world differently. Our identities vary our understanding and experiences of privilege and oppression. We need all voices and experiences at the table in order to see the big picture and work toward a better future for all.
