Imagine waking up and going on a journey to immerse yourself in a castle that symbolizes the start and end of the Shogun era. This was one of the many experiences I had while on the study abroad trip to Japan. For this trip we went to Tokyo and Kyoto and I had an amazing time abroad. Not only did I get to view new places, I was also able to experience the culture and try new foods. While this trip was filled with new experiences I am grateful to have had the opportunity to travel across the world that has allowed me to make memories that will last a lifetime.

As far as the culture, I had some previous knowledge of what to expect when it comes to Japan. I knew about the bowing and standing to one side of the escalator however, being in the environment and seeing it happen in real life was such a surreal experience. Everyone we encountered while in Japan was very respectful and treated us kindly. It was refreshing to see people treat complete strangers with such respect. Even when riding on public transportation, everyone was considerate of others and kept to themselves. There wasn’t much talking on the trains or buses which made everywhere so much quieter than you would expect.
In regard to business in Japan, it was interesting seeing the similarities and differences between Japan and the United States. One thing I noticed was how loyal the people are to their organizations. It is common for employees to stay with their company for twenty plus years. In the United States however, it is very common for people to change jobs every few years. I also noticed that in Japan, they prioritize building relationships prior to conducting business with them. This goes to show that collaboration and relationships mean so much to them and how they do business.
During the trip we visited many different places, a few of my favorites were the Golden Pavilion also known as the Kinkakuji Temple, Nijo Castle, and the Imperial Palace. The Golden Pavilion was beautiful, with the gold-leaf coated exterior and the trees surrounding the temple were stunning. It was also so peaceful and calm in the area surrounding the pavilion. The Nijo Castle made me feel like I was truly in a Shogun movie. The rooms, artwork, squeaking floor, and layout to this day seem as if the shoguns were there yesterday. Everything was kept up so well and maintained over the years. Lastly, the Imperial Palace was another place that was very interesting. The large gardens and lawns that were on the outer side just made me imagine what events and celebrations could have been had there centuries ago. Although we only saw a peak of the actual palace, what we were able to see was still beautiful.
This trip was truly an amazing experience, I had a wonderful time with the group and experiencing new places. I would tell other students that studying abroad is a must! Traveling to another country and being able to emerge yourself in the culture with other students your age is a once in a lifetime opportunity. Not only do you get to explore new places, but you also get to grow bonds with others who are on the trip and make memories that will last a lifetime. Not only did I have a wonderful time while there, I would definitely go back and explore more of Japan!
Ravyn Moore (BS Management) spent December 2024 studying abroad in Japan with the Rollins College of Business. Ravyn had the following to say about studying abroad, “Studying abroad is a once and a lifetime experience that if given the opportunity should do! Experiencing new cultures, exploring different places, and tasting diverse foods, will leave you with memories that you will have for the rest of your life. Beyond the adventure, studying abroad allows you to discover more about yourself and embrace a fresh perspective on life.”
