UTC’s popular Take Five literary series returns in 2014 with a focus on Appalachian Literature.
“This year’s series will change from its traditional early summer time to Tuesday nights in January through April,” according to Dr. Verbie Prevost, Connor Professor of American literature and director of this year’s program.
Take Five is free and open to the public; light refreshments will be available. Interested participants are welcome at all or any of the individual sessions, which will involve a presentation by the faculty member followed by a discussion involving all presenters and the audience. All sessions will be held in the Chattanooga Rooms of the University Center at UTC from 6-7:30 p.m.
The opening session of this series will be Tuesday, January 7, when Prevost will lecture on Wendell Berry’s novel Hannah Coulter.

Take Five is sponsored by the English Department, the Connor Professorship of American Literature, the Brock Scholars Program, and the Connor Society.
Dr. Margaret Kelley, regular attendee at previous Take Five programs, praised the return of the program and noted, “Take Five is and has been a wonderful gift to the community from UTC’s English faculty. It’s such a delight to discuss good books with other readers, and with the explosion of interest in Appalachian literature, what a timely focus for this year’s program.”
Take Five was begun by Professor Emeritus Arlie Herron in 1992 and has occurred irregularly over two decades with focus on such areas as Faulkner, Edith Wharton, international fiction, Tennessee Writers, Southern writers, and Civil War fiction.
