Processionals, gonfalons and the “Imperial March.” The revelry of past University of Tennessee at Chattanooga commencements was back. For the first time since 2019, commencement at UTC was held without the restrictions of COVID-19 and McKenzie Arena renovations. Three ceremonies were held over two days starting Friday, May 3, with more than 1,300 undergraduates and nearly 300 graduate students presented for degrees.

Chamyra Teasley wins Harold Love Outstanding Community Service Award
UTC junior Chamyra Teasley has won the Harold Love Outstanding Community Service Award, given by the Tennessee Higher Education Commission to 10 individuals in higher education throughout the state who demonstrate a lasting, meaningful impact through service; are valued by peers and community leaders; and embody the legacy of the late Rep. Harold Love Sr.—the namesake of the award.

The 11th UTC MLK Day celebration brought a pair of co-headliners to Chattanooga—Dr. Bernice A. King and Dr. Ilyasah Shabazz. The event took place on Friday, Jan. 19, at Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Auditorium.
Final act: Theater graduate finds ‘a sense of fulfillment’ from acting
Isaiah Mark Owens took acting classes in high school and, when all was said and done, the thrill of acting stuck. The end result is a degree in theater he will earn in December 2023 from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga.

A memorable Homecoming Week 2023 at the University of Tennessee in Chattanooga came to a close on Saturday, Oct. 7, with the crowning of the Homecoming King and Queen during halftime of the Mocs’ football game against Western Carolina—seniors Tred Hill and Dominique Harris.

UTC senior Mateo Jimenez has been serving as an American Connection Corps/Regional Connectivity Fellow for Lead For America—a national nonprofit organization that trains college students to serve as full-time local government or nonprofit employees in their home communities. Fellows are placed in positions where they can directly impact challenges such as education, healthcare, economic development, environmental sustainability and social equity.
