During the Summer of 2023, from May 22 to July 1, I was given the unique opportunity to study abroad in Heredia, Costa Rica. Prior to this trip, I have never studied abroad before, I have never left the country before, I have never even been on a plane before. Choosing Costa Rica as a study destination is a wise decision for American students, given the country’s natural wonder and cultural diversity. This essay will explore my experience while studying abroad in Costa Rica as an American student, including the unique cultural immersion, academic challenges, language barriers, social interactions, and the profound impact on my personal development.
When I first arrived, I was met with a kind host family that consisted of a husband, his wife, and their 10 year old daughter. Upon arriving at my host home, I was immediately treated with the utmost hospitality. I was given 2 different types of natural juices, one of which was made from a coconut that had a straw in it. I was surprised with how natural things were, and my host family fed me until I told them that I was full. Costa Ricans, known as “Ticos” or “Ticas,” are renowned for their friendly and welcoming nature. As an American student, I found myself quickly integrated into local communities, forming lasting friendships with both fellow international students and locals. Socializing with Costa Ricans exposed me to their unique perspectives, further enriching my cultural experience. You can also expect to meet a diverse group of international students from around the world, creating a global network of friends and acquaintances. The friendships forged during my study abroad not only enriched my time in Costa Rica but it also provided valuable connections for my future personal and professional endeavors. I met many different types of people who were native to the land. My host dad took me to meet some of his family members. His niece, who was my age, was very kind and we got along perfectly. I also met a student who was a fashion designer who said he wanted to travel to France to become a professional fashion designer. Everyone there was so friendly and welcoming, it made my experience all the better, especially with this being my first time immersed in a new culture.
Costa Rica boasts a reputable and well-established higher education system. As an American student, you can expect a diverse range of courses and academic programs, often centered around sustainability, environmental studies, marine biology, and other topics that capitalize on the country’s unique ecosystem. Engaging in hands-on learning experiences, field trips to national parks, and research opportunities will add depth to your academic journey. Interestingly enough, subjects that included biology and biodiversity were included as options to study for USAC. This just proves how perfect the area is for the study of biology. Costa Rica’s commitment to sustainable development and environmental protection makes it an ideal place to explore topics related to climate change, conservation, and biodiversity. By studying in this ecologically conscious country, you will gain a deeper understanding of the pressing global challenges and potential solutions. Speaking of nature, Costa Rica’s breathtaking landscapes are a nature lover’s paradise. From lush rainforests and majestic volcanoes to stunning beaches and abundant wildlife, the country offers numerous opportunities for outdoor adventures. Even the university I attended, La Universidad Nacional, had beautiful landscapes that included gardens, wild trees, birdhouses, bridges over streams, and more. While in Costa Rica, I took trips to Punta Leona, La Paz Waterfall Gardens, and various parts of San José. Punta Leona is a beach resort. La Paz Waterfall Gardens was a journey that included hiking and seeing various animals native to the land. I saw beautiful sights and it made me appreciate nature and its various forms a lot more than I have done in the past.
While Spanish is the official language of Costa Rica, many locals also speak English, especially in major cities and tourist destinations. However, the language barrier can still be a significant challenge for American students studying in Costa Rica. Embracing this obstacle with an open mind and a willingness to learn will undoubtedly enhance your language skills. Interacting with locals, attending language exchange programs, and practicing Spanish outside the classroom will help you develop fluency and improve your overall communication skills. I myself experienced this. My host family did not speak English, so I had to speak Spanish to them 24/7 in order to be able to communicate with them, which was my choice of course. Studying abroad in Costa Rica will push you out of your comfort zone, encouraging personal growth and cultural adaptation. Navigating daily life in a foreign country, adapting to different customs, and learning to overcome challenges will foster resilience and independence. I returned home with a broader perspective, a more open mind, and increased self-confidence, ready to embrace future opportunities with a newfound sense of courage and determination.
Studying abroad in Costa Rica as an American student is an unparalleled journey of cultural immersion, personal growth, and academic exploration. The experience of living and learning in this captivating country undoubtedly left a lasting impact, shaping worldview and influencing my future endeavors. From embracing cultural diversity and language learning to forming meaningful friendships and exploring the country’s natural beauty, my time in Costa Rica was an unforgettable chapter in my life’s story.
