UTC sponsored the 2011 Special Olympics Area 4 Basketball Tournament in Maclellan Gymnasium. It was the second year the event will be at UTC, and the program has grown since locating to the university.
“Since last year, we have worked with them to develop this program further,” Andrew Clark, UTC Student Body President, said. “We have even added more teams this year. We hope that we will have to one day overflow to the ARC!”
Bruce Young, a Chattanooga resident, cheered on his son, Isaiah, during the tournament.
“We’ve enjoyed watching these games,” Young said. “It’s great that children with of all different abilities can come out and play.”
More than 75 UTC students volunteered on Friday and the ARC staff was on hand to assist with referees, scoring, and any other needs. According to Clark, many of the students are in the Health and Human Performance program, Occupational Therapy program, student leadership programs, and Campus Recreation.
“It was an amazing day for these athletes!” Clark said.
