Six students from the greater Chattanooga Area who recently took top honors in the UTC Music Department Piano Arts Competition will perform in a recital at the UTC Cadek Recital Hall on Sunday, June 12 at 3 p.m. This event is free and open to the public.
Tyler Hyers of Goodlettsville took first prize at the Middle School level, with second prize being a tie between Emalyn San Miguel from Cleveland and Sean Lee from Dalton. At the high school level, Jin Park of Ringgold took top honors, with Jonathan Lau of Chattanooga in second place and Abigail Hinchman of Chattanooga in third place. Grace Stipelcovich from Chattanooga and Kelsey Stansell of Hixson earned Honorable Mentions at the middle school and high school levels respectively.
The Piano Arts Competition is an annual event sponsored by the UTC Music Department for students in the tri-state area. Students are invited to compete each year to provide motivation for further growth, and to hone their competition skills. Many previous winners choose to continue their musical studies at UTC and the competition serves as an essential liaison in connecting young pianists with UTC professors.
The competition was adjudicated by UTC piano faculty members Deanne Irvine, Janet Sump, and David Walters. Dr. Alan Nichols, a UTC alumnus, was guest judge and Dr. Sin-Hsing Tsai, Coordinator of the Keyboard area for UTC, was the non-voting competition chair.
