Called “a thrilling, extraordinary journey,” Dr. Richard Jackson’s book of poetry Resonance earned him the 2011 Eric Hoffer award. Jackson holds the title of UC Foundation Professor of English.
“We are thrilled with this most recent recognition of Richard Jackson’s poetry. This award is one in a series of recognitions accorded Dr. Jackson during recent years for his accomplishments as a poet,” Dr. Verbie Prevost, Department Head of English, said.
“His international reputation as an outstanding poet continues to grow, bringing honor not only to him, but also to the English Department and to UTC. In particular, his accomplishments enhance our Creative Writing program which has been proclaimed by several major writers as the best undergraduate program in the U.S.,” Prevost continued.
The Eric Hoffer Award, established as the 21st century began with the purpose of “opening a door to writing of significant merit,” is a memorial to the American philosopher Eric Hoffer.
Annually, the award recognizes outstanding writing in a variety of categories, including short prose and book awards for works published by independent presses, i.e., small, micro, and academic presses. The winning stories and essays are published in Best New Writing. US Review of Books announces and reviews the winning books.
