New admissions requirements for all UT campuses have been approved by the University of Tennessee Board of Trustees. This action means students seeking admission to any UT campus must take more math and science classes, including three units of natural science instead of two.
For UTC, the Board approved increased admission requirements. Beginning fall 2012, the freshman admission standard will be raised from a 2.75 high school GPA to a 2.85 high school GPA with an 18 ACT composite score or an 890 SAT composite score.
“These new admission requirements demonstrate UTC’s commitments to student success and student access. We want all students to have the opportunity to achieve their goals. These new requirements are aimed at admitting those students with the highest likelihood of success here at UTC,” said Yancy Freeman, assistant vice chancellor for enrollment services.
In other action, the UT Board of Trustees approved a $1.861 billion budget for fiscal year 2012, reflecting a loss of stimulus dollars, tuition increases at each campus, and raises for faculty and staff for the first time in four years.
At UTC, student maintenance fees will increase 9.9 percent ($243 per semester) and an increase of $60 per semester athletics fee and a $25 per semester library fee. For full-time, in-state undergraduate students, this will result in a total increase of $328 per semester, or $3,359 total semester fee payment.
The Board approved the extension of the UTC regional tuition rate program for undergraduates and graduate student for 2011-12. UTC continues to offer residents of Catoosa, Dade, Fannin, Murray, Walker, and Whitfield counties in Georgia and Jackson county in Alabama a regional tuition rate. Eligible students pay a tuition rate equal to in-house fees plus 25 percent of out of state tuition. Undergraduate, master’s and doctoral degrees, certificates and specialist programs are included.
The UT Board of Trustees also approved:
- A salary increase for UTC regular employees—3 percent across the board, with an additional 1 percent pool being set aside for one-time merit bonuses.
- UTC to commemorate its 125th anniversary on commencement diplomas in August 2011, December 2011 and May 2012.
