The Cress Gallery of Art is hosting The UTC Department of Art 2012 Juried Student Exhibition, an annual tradition of the Cress Gallery and the UTC Department of Art. The exhibition runs until January 29. Gallery hours are from 9:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m., Monday through Friday and 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday and Sunday. Admission to the Cress and all its events are free and open to the public.
This year’s Juried Student Exhibition presents a wide array of works that reference and find place in the broader issues and current trends of contemporary art and studio practice. Selected works range from the UTC Department of Art’s Foundation Level Program through the Upper Level curriculum of the Department’s four Bachelor of Arts degrees: Painting and Drawing, Photography and Media Arts, 3-D Studio Sculpture / Ceramics, and Graphic Design; and as well the Department’s Bachelor of Arts (BA) and Bachelor of Science (BS Art Education).
This year’s student exhibition was judged by William T. Dooley, Director and Curator of the Sarah Moody Gallery at University of Alabama. From 145 works submitted by students in the first through fourth year of study, the juror selected 64 works created by 54 individuals.
“The works submitted to this exhibition convey a strong sense of draftsmanship, design, and self-expression. These explorations with materials, process, concept, and content are potent. I appreciate the craftsmanship of many pieces, and I am encouraged by a sense of questioning and discovery found in the works submitted. There is a feeling of energy and excitement,” Dooley said.
