UTC’s master plan consultants presented the latest draft for future development in a series of campus and community sessions held March 21 and 22. We welcome your comments on the blog. The drawing represents proposed buildings, structures, and spaces in dark, vibrant colors. Existing buildings, structures, and spaces are shown in lighter colors.
Features:
West of the new library, a long-term academic quad is planned. Academic buildings are clustered in this central location as planners considered the 10-minute class change and a manageable walk around the core of campus.
Housing—new housing along MLK could offer retail opportunities, office space, or academic programs with an outreach component; extended housing down Vine Street; new housing proposed on East Third, bordered by Collins and Palmetto. Longer range planning could include changes to Lockmiller and specialty housing near Engel Stadium.
Campus recreation—track and field, soccer venue, and tennis facilities are planned at Engel. Additionally, rec fields to satisfy intramural interests could extend from Engel to McCallie Avenue.
Parking, proposed—Engel Stadium surface parking could be converted to a parking structure. Additional floors could be added to the existing Lupton Library parking garage.
Safety—two roundabouts are shown. The city has planned one at East Third Street and Riverside Drive, and a campus roundabout is planned at Douglas and East Fifth Streets; two pedestrian bridges are proposed for crossing East Fourth Street, and one crossing East Fifth Street to and from the ARC.
