Warren St. John, author of Outcasts United, will be the guest speaker at Convocation 2012 on September 13, at 12:15 p.m. in the Roland Hayes Concert Hall.
Outcasts United was selected as this year’s First Year Reading Experience (FYRE) book. It is available in the UTC Bookstore.
Outcasts United is the true story of Clarkston, Georgia, where agencies resettled many refugees in the late 1980s and early 1990s. The Fugees soccer team brought together young men from many of the world’s hotspots. Their home countries included Congo, Sudan, Liberia, Bosnia, Afghanistan and Iraq.
Dr. Sara Jorgensen, Assistant Professor, African and World History, serves as chair of the FYRE committee. Jorgensen encouraged faculty to use Outcasts United in the classroom.
It is the second year the UTC campus has been invited to read a FYRE book. Last year’s book was The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind: Creating Currents of Electricity and Hope. Author William Kamkwamba came to campus and made several inspiring presentations.
