UTC’s Relay and Smart Grid laboratory has been recognized by a leading magazine in the power industry, Transmission and Distribution World. The publication highlighted the unique partnerships between UTC and local utilities in attaining the laboratory, begun more than a decade ago by Dr. Ahmed H. Eltom, Professor of Electrical Engineering at UTC.
The size of the lab is expected to double by the end of spring 2013 semester, Eltom said, with a commitment by Doble Engineering.
“The laboratory is intended and functions as an educational and research tool for undergraduate and graduate students,” explained Eltom. “Industries use the laboratory for workforce training. Mangers of industries and professors from different regions frequently visit the laboratory.”
The equipment in the laboratory has been donated by industry or has been purchased with a $2.4 million grant Eltom received from the U.S. Department of Energy in 2010.
Synergy and feedback involved in engaging and partnering with the community pays huge dividends to faculty, the University, and the community at large, Eltom added.
