The new Honors College hosted a Homecoming Gala on October 3 in celebration of 37 years of honors education at UTC, bringing together alumni of the Brock Scholars Program, the University Honors Program and University and community leaders for the unveiling of the Honors College itself. Nearly 100 alumni, faculty, staff and guests enjoyed the event.
Dr. Gregory O’Dea, director of the Brock Scholars Program, presented an overview of new programs in the Honors College and the revised Brock Scholars curriculum. The founding Dean of the Honors College, Dr. Linda Frost, presented plans for the renovation of Guerry Center, which will be the dedicated home of the College.
The program concluded with a presentation of the inaugural Honors College Outstanding Alumni Achievement Award to Dr. Joanie Sompayrac, Brock Scholars Class of 1987 and Brock Scholars Program Assistant Director 2004-2014. The award recognizes her outstanding contributions in teaching in the Brock Scholars Program, advising and mentoring honors students, and shaping the honors experiences of students in both the Brock Scholars Program and the Departmental Honors Program. The award has been named in her honor and will be given each year to an alumnus who has provided exceptional service to the Honors College.
The Honors College plans to host a similar event each year during Homecoming season. Details of next year’s event will be announced in August 2015. All Brock Scholars alumni and faculty are invited to attend! Read more.
