To better prepare students for work in the professional field, the UTC Department of Geology has established a student chapter of the American Institute of Professional Geologists (AIPG). The University’s chapter is only one of two in the state of Tennessee and one of 24 nationwide.
According to Dr. Amy Brock-Hon, UTC Associate Professor of Geology, the purpose of the chapter is to promote the study of geology and assist students in gaining professional skills.
“The group organizes a monthly speaker series with professional geologists. There are plans to host resume writing workshops and other activities to better prepare student for graduation,” she said.
Though the UTC chapter was officially chartered last December, the group already has 20 members and a team of elected officers.
“The response from students has been great. They’ve stepped up and done an excellent job so far. They’ve been creative and come up with their own ideas. Every Friday is now ‘Dress Like a Professional Day’” where students attend classes in clothing suitable for a career setting. The group is very focused on preparing students for success post graduation,” Brock-Hon said.
“Getting involved in UTC’s AIPG chapter is a great opportunity for students. Through the group, they can connect with working geologists who can help guide them in their studies and future careers,” she continued.
