Professor emeritus Kim Wheetley was honored by the Southeastern Theatre Conference at the group’s 2015 convention in Chattanooga. He received the Sarah Spencer Child Drama Award, which recognizes an individual or organization for dynamic and engaging work for young people.
This lifetime achievement award honors Wheetley’s 50-year career in several venues. He taught theatre at high schools in Santa Maria, California; Killeen, Texas; and the International School in Bangkok, Thailand. He worked at the Pacific Conservatory of the Performing Arts repertory theatre in Santa Maria and taught at The University of Texas at Austin. He was the theatre consultant for the Texas Education Agency for ten years and then served 25 years as director of theatre education and executive director of the Southeast Center for Education in the Arts at UTC.
Wheetley was a member of the national writing teams for the 1994 National Standards for Theatre Education and 2002 INTASC Standards for Licensing Classroom Teachers and Specialists in the Arts.
He is a past president of the Texas Educational Theatre Association and the American Alliance for Theatre & Education.
