UTC celebrated Veteran’s Week with a slew of events honoring Mocs who have served our country. Below are a few video highlights from the week.
Petty Officer Rex Henry Jr’s Reunion
During the last home football game of the year, MOCS Military Appreciation Football Game, one family received a touching surprise. First Class Petty Officer and Expeditionary Warfare Specialist Rex Henry Jr took the field for an emotional reunion with his unsuspecting family.
Marching Mocs Play “Five”
During the MOCS Military Appreciation Football Game, halftime celebrations included a special presentation of the colors and the Marching Mocs performing a special arrangement of “Five,” a song composed by UTC Associate Professor Kenyon Wilson in a joint commission involving sixty-seven high school, university, community, military, and brass bands to honor the Chattanooga Five: Carson A. Holmquist, Randall Smith, Thomas J. Sullivan, Squire K. “Skip” Wells, and David A. Wyatt.
SGT David A. Stephens Scholarship Presentation
During the Military Appreciation Day game, the SGT David A. Stephens Scholarship was presented to army veteran, David Towery, a junior majoring in social work.
This memorial scholarship honors Sergeant David “Alex” Stephens, a UTC alumnus who was killed in a roadside bombing in Afghanistan on April 12, 2007. Stephens volunteered in the army as a combat medic because he wanted to help soldiers on the battlefield. The scholarship fund is a way for the Student Veterans Organization to honor Stephens by continuing his tradition of helping soldiers, by easing the financial burden of student veterans attending our University.
UTC Taps Project
During the first-ever TAPS Project at UTC, trumpet players from across our community came together to play “Taps” in a round. This moving tribute cascaded across Campus, echoing between building walls, in a moving display that honored those who have served our country.
